Toasty and crisp, an excellent beer for any occasion.

Samuel Adams® Pale Ale is a delicious, lighter bodied beer with a delightfully fresh taste. Its unique blend of two-row malts add a rich harmony of sweet flavors that are complimented by the earthy hop character imparted by traditional British ale hops. The fermentation character of the ale yeast adds a bouquet of fruit and ester notes for another layer of complexity to this popular style.

Unlike its American cousins, Samuel Adams Pale Ale is an English style pale ale. Instead of a more bitter hop signature indicative of an American or India Pale Ale, an English pale ale is known for its earthy and slightly fruity characteristics from the English hops that are balanced with a golden malt undertone. The English pale ale can be traced back to the city of Burton-on-Trent that has an abundance of hard water. Before more sophisticated water purification, the hardness or softness of the area’s water supply greatly influenced the beer. In the case of English pale ales the harder water gave the beer its clarity and enhanced the bitterness of the softer English hops.

The other defining factor of an English pale ale is the lighter roasted malted barley. Other beers of the time such as stouts and porters used darker roasts. The style evolved during the 17th century and key to its development were the introduction of the thermometer and hydrometer to brewing. Both allowed for better control over the malting process allowing for more consistent production of pale ales.

Samuel Adams Pale Ale uses the traditional English hops of Fuggles and Goldings that impart an earthy aroma that balances the sweetness of the pale malted barley. The Golding hop dates back to the 1780’s in East Kent where we still find them today for our beers. Fuggles emerged from the English Midlands near Old Hay in the 1860’s and then were grown in East Kent.
